I recently had the opportunity to teach my daughter's kindergarten class a "Talking Canvas" lesson all about you and your work. The kids immediately recognized your work and were completely enthralled. I went to the public library and checked out every one of your books they had and passed them out to the children. I asked them to pay close attention to the detail of the pictures. It was so fun to see them get excited, then turn to their neighbor and say, "Hey cool! Look at this seahorse!" Thank you for sharing your gifts and talents with the world. A little kindergarten class in Iowa admires you.
I've always loved your work and used it as both a teacher and a parent. Also travelled often to the Museum in Hadley and attended many Reggio seminars there in your beautiful studio. Am now working on an early literacy project with 3-year olds and they are thoroughly enjoying The Very Busy Spider!
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of the more than 70 picture books that I have written and/or illustrated. I was born in the U.S. and was raised in Germany. My background is in graphic design but since the late 1960's when I illustrated Bill Martin Jr's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? I have been creating books for children. My illustrations are collages made with my own hand-painted tissue papers, a technique many children have replicated and enjoyed in their classrooms and at home. With my late wife Barbara, I am also the cofounder of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, MA.
And out like a lamb :)
