I received many lovely e-mails and letters this spring including these beautiful photographs of pictures from a book created by school children in Portugal.
As a parent and teacher, I can't thank you enough for the profound influence that you have had on children and their love of reading. It brings me the greatest joy to see my son perfectly loving some of the same books that were dear to me as a child. I'd love to share this video with you of our son, 2 years old, "reading" The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
I was introduced to your work when my 7-year old son, Samuel, was born and we both have been fans ever since! I am the President of the Dartmouth Library Foundation (MA) and would love to have you make an appearance at our next annual meeting. Any chance that you will be in the SouthCoast of MA this October 2009? Thanks!! Rosemary
Hi Eric, My daughter loved your books and so does my granddaughter. I wonder if one of your books ever contained characters (perhaps a bee and butterfly?) named Mitha and Mithy? My daughter loved the book but can't remember the title and wants to get it for her daughter. Thanks very much. Mara Kurtz marakurtz@gmail.com
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of the more than 70 picture books that I have written and/or illustrated. I was born in the U.S. and was raised in Germany. My background is in graphic design but since the late 1960's when I illustrated Bill Martin Jr's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? I have been creating books for children. My illustrations are collages made with my own hand-painted tissue papers, a technique many children have replicated and enjoyed in their classrooms and at home. With my late wife Barbara, I am also the cofounder of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, MA.
I can see your influence in those joyful pictures. Thanks for inspiring future artists.
