- The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of the more than 70 picture books that I have written and/or illustrated. I was born in the U.S. and was raised in Germany. My background is in graphic design but since the late 1960's when I illustrated Bill Martin Jr's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? I have been creating books for children. My illustrations are collages made with my own hand-painted tissue papers, a technique many children have replicated and enjoyed in their classrooms and at home. With my late wife Barbara, I am also the cofounder of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, MA.
Thank you very, very much for the beautiful Thanksgiving greeting. I work in the pre-school section of a public library. I always shelve your books first. They are my favorites as well as my first choice as gifts for first-time parents.

ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you too! :) I very much enjoyed touring your museum this past week and recalling your visit to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center some years ago. You were so very generous with your time and enjoyed seeing my well-cared for copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar that I bought for my son, now 41, when he was in first grade. :) My friend and I left your museum inspired to make some art. Happy Holidays!!
