Meeting Tomi Ungerer

Bobbie and I spent this past weekend in Massachusetts where we thoroughly enjoyed meeting Tomi Ungerer and his lovely family. An exhibit of Tomi's work, Tomi Ungerer, Chronicler of the Absurd is currently on view at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.

This weekend was the first time Tomi and I met in person, although we both came to New York in the early 1950's where with just a few dollars in our pockets we planned to begin our careers. Tomi started to work in children's picture book illustration soon after he arrived, and I worked in the field of graphic design for a number of years before I began making picture books. It was a great honor to meet and I am very happy to have Tomi's work on exhibit during this year of his 80th birthday. I hope you will come and see the show!

You can preview Tomi's exhibit here.

  1. Happy Birthday Mr. Carle!

My daughters and I adore you.
You are our VERY favorite author/illustrator/mixed-media artist!

We love to make paste papers, collages, and write our own stories.

Wishing you another year of creative inspiration, studio time, good friends, good wine, and good health!

    Fondly,
    MaryLea Harris and Family

  2. I can't wait to visit the museum. Hopefull, we'll be able to in the very near future.

I run a small home-based preschool called Child's Play. My students (five 4 and 5 year olds) would like to wish you a very Happy Birthday. We're celebrating with a Hungry Caterpillar cupcake cake this afternoon.

We recently did our first author study and you were a fabulous first choice. The children all love your work so much. We spent two weeks reading your books, trying your collage techniques, and just really enjoying our first steps into the "reading club".

Thanks so much for sharing your work with us. Have a wonderful birthday!

  3. i couldn't attend the members' reception, but I went the next day when Tomi was signing books with my 3 year old niece. Ever since we got back from the exhibit, she wants to read Moon man all the time. See you in July at the museum! :)

  5. Hello Mr Carle. My name is Marilyn Toenjes and I'm 66 years old. I teach second grade in Reedsburg, WI. I did an entire unit this past year using you and your books. We also created our own books and illustrated them using a modified form of your method! I was so proud and the children LOVED every moment of the unit. Now, I am about to become a grandma for the first time. I just bought "Pajama Bear" at Kohl's. Did you design this cuddly bear? I just love it, and I am sure that my future grandchild (who I all "Muffin") will, too. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us all!
