- The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of the more than 70 picture books that I have written and/or illustrated. I was born in the U.S. and was raised in Germany. My background is in graphic design but since the late 1960's when I illustrated Bill Martin Jr's Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? I have been creating books for children. My illustrations are collages made with my own hand-painted tissue papers, a technique many children have replicated and enjoyed in their classrooms and at home. With my late wife Barbara, I am also the cofounder of The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, MA.

Thank you for all the wonderful memories your books have brought me in the past. When I was in kindergarten through second grade those very books, as well as many fables, folklore later on and fiction brightened up my world..no, really! They show sadness, joy, calm thought and teach others to look beyond their boudaries of learning , out of the box.or so I think. My sister in kindergarten as well even had a presentation and class performance of brown bear brown bear. I'm so happy the books are all well in everyones thoughts. ...im hoping to become a field biologist in ecology...that and maybe a teacher! ....its all thanks to those that taught others such as myself, without words but pictures as well that ...well, they made sound boxes for the inside of 90s books...that sort. Be well . That's all I have left to say ...really.
